Knowledge and Hands-On Experience for a Transformative Education
The faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are dedicated to providing each of our students with a high-quality educational experience that integrates the knowledge and understanding of chemistry with hands-on training and use of modern instrumentation.
Our programs include these experiences at every level. Coupled with one-on-one interactions between faculty and students, the result is a transformative educational experience that results in graduates highly qualified for work in industry, as high school teachers, or for continuing studies in graduate school or health-related post-graduate schools.
We offer excellent undergraduate and graduate degree programs delivered by dedicated faculty in modern classrooms and laboratories. Undergraduate emphases include ACS-certified degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry, and emphasis areas in Pre-health, Forensic Science, and Industrial Chemistry. The department also offers the M.S. in Chemistry, the M.S. in Chemical Education and the Ph.D. in Chemical Education. Faculty members are active in research in all major subdisciplines of chemistry.

Chemistry Department Seminar Schedule. Join us this semester for some outstanding seminars.
Brewing Laboratory Science. The Department administers a unique program in Brewing Laboratory Science. That program is designed to teach skills needed to work in the brewing industry as QA/QC specialists. Both a certificate and a minor are part of the program of study. More information about this program and ways you can get involved can be found on the Brewing Lab Science website.
Highlights of Our Program
The Department is home to specialized instrumentation that supports its mission in teaching and research. Key instrumentation includes a 400 MHz multinuclear FT-NMR, AA, FT-IR, UV-vis, HPLC (multiple detector options), GC (multiple detector options), polarography, X-ray diffraction (powder and single crystal), X-ray fluorometry, bomb calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry.
Research opportunities are strongly recommended for all undergraduate students in our program, and required for the ACS-approved majors. Students work one-on-one with faculty to complete novel research projects and present their work at regional and national meetings.
